Maggie Cleary joined Clare Locke LLP as an Associate. Before joining the firm, Maggie served as Senior Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice. Her practice focuses on high-stakes litigation and strategic counseling.

Prior to joining Clare Locke, Maggie spent nearly a decade as a state and federal prosecutor in Virginia. She served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia and later as First Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Maggie also served as a Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney for Culpeper County, Virginia, where she prosecuted serious felony cases, with a particular focus on domestic violence and crimes against children. In addition, she served as Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security under Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and as Special Counsel to Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, advising executive leadership on public safety, criminal justice, and legislative matters. Maggie began her legal career as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Culpeper County.

In addition to her legal practice, Maggie served as an Adjunct Professor at her alma mater, the University of Virginia School of Law, where she taught Applied Trial Evidence. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Services to Abused Families (SAFE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. She is also a lector and active member of Our Lady of the Blue Ridge Catholic Church.

Maggie earned her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with a B.A. in Philosophy and American Studies.
